NABARD Sponsored Watershed Development project in Karangarh & Bhawandih watershed area of Chakai, Jamui District
NABARD Sponsored Watershed Development project was launched in 05.04.2007 in Karangarh & Bhawandih watershed area of Chakai Block under Jamui District. Jan Vikas Samiti Itasagar(JVSI),was the executive agency of the project. Drought situation was the regular phenomena of the area before commencement of the watershed project. Agriculture and animal husbandry is the main source of livelihood of the community residing in the project area. Agriculture was rain fed but in absence of rain water conservation structures approximately 70% of rain water was lost by run – off. The incidence of regular drought affected the measurable livelihood status of the people especially small, marginal farmers and landless families. This poor socioeconomic condition resulted in people’s migration for long durations.
Undulated topography having 3 to 5% slope and light soil texture kachcha embankment construction was not feasible so water harvesting plants did not succeed in the area. With the sincere effort of the executing agency,in close contact with the community during PRA exercise, schemes of water conservation were selected and executed in due course.
In watershed project gabion and bunds were constructed in 10 places of Dahranwala. Water harvesting structures created henceforth became a boon for the locality. The main crop in kharif season is paddy. Productivity of crop enhanced and assured after successful implementation of the project. Once when the whole Jamui district was declared drought affected the area received a bumper crop of paddy. As a result, fodder was even supplied to neighboring villages from villages under project area.
Approximately 87 hectare of barren land was brought into cultivated land and 105 hectare mono cropped area converted into double cropped area enhancing crop intensity of the area.
In the summer season drinking water problems were observed commonly but water was conserved in ponds and aahar and this raised the underground water level and the problem of drinking water was solved forever. Income from cattle wealth also rose due to availability of sufficient dry and greed fodder.
Before commencement of the project people hardly were able to grow paddy crops but after the project farmers were growing vegetables in nearby nala fields and fetching remunerative prices by selling the products in Madhopur Hatt. In the project area with the formation of SHG, people of landless category were trained in basket making trade from locally available bamboo. They sell it in Deoghar religious town and start earning for themselves .
In nutshell, the community had to face regular drought and poor yield of crops and livestock before launching the project but now the situation has changed. Having good yield, main crop paddy and wheat, vegetables in rabi season, the socio economic condition of the community has upgraded. The migration level has reduced considerably. Women of SHG started value addition work of potato and tomato. The food habits of the people changed from rice to wheat and green vegetables. So, chronic problems of malnutrition vanished. The project outcome in terms of poverty alleviation, gender sensitization and abolition of migration is satisfactory and appreciable
Khaira Watershed
Khaira watershed project,Khaira under Jamui district was sanctioned by NABARD in the year 2016. The project area is having an annual average rainfall of 1161.31 mm. The proposed khaira watershed lies in the khaira block of Jamui district. The watershed is at a distance of 13 kms from the Khaira block H.Q. and 20 km from Jamui dist H.Q. The watershed covers 8 villages namely Dharampur, Chihutiya, Bhojpur, Kairakado, Daingarwa, Kewalphariata, Amarwa and Jhundo. The watershed area is equipped with rolling uplands with the slope of 3—5%. The middle and lower catchment has slope range with 1 to 3%. The watershed area is spread over 1150.52 ha of Land with watershed code 2A4B3BC2a1 and 2A4B3Bc2a2.
The watershed area is dependent on rain. Hence the kharif crop of paddy even is not assured. Occurence of drought is a regular phenomena of the area. The cattle wealth is of indgenous type, having a poor yielding breed of cow and buffalo. Soil erosion by water is normally observed due to poor soil and water conservation facilities.
Watershed projects by NABARD were sanctioned in the year 2016 January. Renovation of water bodies was executed with the help of villagers cooperation under mandatory shramdan.
NABARD sanctioned capacity building phase in village Kewalphariata. 3 schemes of renovation of Ahars, Construction of 2 new ponds were completed. Farm bunding was completed to check.Water loss by runoff was also executed.
Due to Implementation of soil and water conservation work in C.B.P. area the capacity of water bodies raised. During kharif 2017, in the critical stage there was scarcity of rain and paddy crop suffered a lot. But in the command area of watershed in Kewalphariata village the failure of monsoon had no adverse effect on crop yield.
Farmers utilised stored water in Ahar and Pond for Rabi crop also. Thus the work completed under C.B.P. phase proved its utmost utility in crop production. Farmers response was positive for next phase. They were curious for early implementation of the full implementation phase.
The impact of the watershed project is clearly visible in the area . As the watershed area is fully dependent on Agriculture and allied activities, so the implementation of the project has fulfilled the dream of residents of villages under this project. For landless families income generation through goat rearing will also prove fruitful and provide social justice with assured regular income.
Decrease in ground water level checked due to water stored in few structures in Kewalphariata village

Result of Mobile Training Under SDI Programme
We, Jan Vikas Samiti Itasagar(JVSI),desire to write about development; activities run by it in collaboration with NABARD, as a duty to acknowledge common people concerning employment generation in rural areas of district Jamui.
Chandramandih, Karangarh, Vasuki Tanr and others are rural villages of chakai block in the aforesaid district. Their villages face leftwing activities and are backward for being cursed with subsequent droughts. The said area is 30 km from Deoghar in Jharkhand and 90 km away from Jamui in the east. Pucca road link transportation fulfills communicational facilities. Primary Education in the area is done by primary and middle schools. Residents depend on agricultural activities for livelihood. Most Young Ladies and Gents travel far and wide in search of primary livelihood. Said situation invoked Jan Vikas Samiti Itasagar(JVSI), a voluntary institution to run watershed schemes in collaboration with NABARD from 2007 to 2012. As a result of watershed schemes, augmentation in agricultural production is seen. Water label of the area improved. Residents began their small scale bread – earning activities in small groups. Indeed labour exodus is checked to some extent.
Meanwhile, in co – operation with NABARD, Jan Vikas Samiti Itasagar(JVSI) imparted training for mobile – set repairing under the SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME. It was done for a period of two months and 30 students were trained. The DDM, NABARD, Jamui Shri Sanjeev Kumar and the Project Implementation Committee supervised the work and with efficiency and their guidance the training got completed.
Below are some of our trainees who have successfully started a source of livelihood.
